The Moon: Looking Back and Looking Forward
Fifty years after the historic first landing of human explorers on the Moon, NASA astronaut and planetary scientist Dr. Stanley G. Love will review the motivations and accomplishments of the Apollo program, present an overview of NASA’s plans to return human explorers to the Moon’s surface in the next few years, and discuss what those explorers might do there after they land and plant the flag. Despite an impression that we’ve “been there and done that” with regard to our nearest celestial neighbor, the Moon offers much more than opportunities to build national prestige. It is a treasure trove of scientific and economic riches that we’ve only just begun to open. We hope you can join the discussion and learn about the amazing future that awaits us on the Moon

ISMCR Early Registration Ends 8/15

The AIAA Houston Section is a proud technical sponsor of:

Kicking Off the 2019-2020 Year: Get Involved, Bylaws, and #SpaceGeekSpeak

Happy August! I hope the summer is off to a superb start (and you and your loved ones are staying cool and comfortable in this heat).

I am Irene Chan, the 2019-2020 AIAA Houston Section Chair. Along with the Executive Council (EC), I am at the ready to harness that awe-inspiring energy from witnessing the technological leaps and bounds we have made in the aerospace industry since the Apollo program. The EC is starting to ramp up the planning for the 2019-2020 year to sustain that enriching appreciation for anything and everything related to aerospace.

Get Involved

Are there activities the section should invest resources on? In addition to our Annual Technical Symposium, are there other technical committee efforts you would like to see?

If you would like to help shape the future of aerospace in various Texas counties and polish that leadership experience, mark your calendars for the EC retreat on Tuesday, August 27, 6pm and contact me at chair2019@aiaahouston.org for more details.

There are plenty of open seats at the EC table and we would love to have you join the merry party! The open positions on the org chart (PDF) barely scratch the surface of available opportunities. (Please tell me that being a webmaster jam master for the section is your calling.)

Bylaws

Earlier this year, the bylaws were updated to be consistent across all sections. To formally adopt the updated bylaws, the section needs to:

  1. review the updates (Please see AIAA Houston Bylaws 2019.pdf)
  2. send in their votes on whether or not to approve these updates

By Monday, August 26, 5pm, please send your questions, comments, and votes to chair2019@aiaahouston.org.

#SpaceGeekSpeak

Thank you for making this series of informal chats a success! We are certainly continuing this during the 2019-2020 year. Please join us:
Saturdays
8:30am
Seabrook Classic Cafe: 2511 Nasa Rd 1, Seabrook, TX 77586

I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to translate that enthusiasm for aerospace into another realm of reality.

Local Pollution & Your Health Forum

Local Pollution & Your Health Forum
Date: Tuesday, June 25, 2019
Time: 6:30 PM
Place: Bay Area Community Center, 5002 East NASA Parkway
Free: No RSVP required. Public meeting.

Recent petrochemical pollution incidents caused by Hurricane Harvey, ITC/Deer Park fire and the Bayport Channel ship/barge crash spread air and water toxic emissions of dangerous benzene, xylene, butadiene, vinyl chloride and other toxic releases. Red lights are flashing for Houston residents. Add in the KMCO fire, Arkema explosion and others too numerous to list, and it’s clear that the current industrial community may be stretched too far to consistently protect residents. Worse yet, the southeast Texas petrochemical industry is in a massive new development phase fueled by Permian Basin oil and LNG, further expanding the likelihood of more dangerous incidents.

Planned speakers include:
Galveston Bay Foundation – Bob Stokes, President
Air Alliance Houston – Lucy Randall, Board Member
Sierra Club Houston – Melanie Oldham, Air Quality Chair
Environmental Defense Fund – TBD
District 129 State Representative Dennis Paul – Invited
