2021 National Writing Contest

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has had a long-standing tradition of holding this annual essay contest throughout the nation, and the Houston Section of the AIAA would like to invite all 7th grade and 8th grade students from CCISD to participate in this year’s writing contest.

The topic for 2021 is “Describe science experiments you can conduct on the lunar surface that are unique to our Moon”. One 7th grade and one 8th grade student will be selected at the Houston Section level to advance to Nationals.

The deadline for students to submit their essays to the Houston Section is April 30, 2021. The Section winners will be announced on May 15, 2021 and the National winners will be announced on June 1, 2021. Attached is the event flyer with additional details on the essay submission.

AIAA Houston: New Chair

Please join us in thanking the outgoing Houston Section Chair, Irene Chan, for her service as Chair this past ~18 months. Irene did an excellent job of leading the section through a very challenging year.

Please also join us in welcoming Jorge Hernandez as the incoming Houston Section Chair. Jorge is the current President of Bastion Technologies, Inc. and brings a wealth of experience to this role.

Congressional Visits Day 2021

Congressional Visits Day 2021 will be a digital event

Date: Week of 15 March (schedule digital meetings with congressional staff throughout the week per each state team’s schedule)

Congressional Visits Day (CVD) is an annual event that gathers AIAA members—engineers, scientists, researchers, and students—to meet with national decision makers and discuss critical community issues in aeronautics, astronautics, and defense. Through meetings with members of Congress, legislative staff, and other key stakeholders, CVD raises awareness of the long-term value that science, engineering, and technology bring to America.

For interested participants, there are several training sessions available. Mr. David Fox has availability to prepare people in smaller groups for a more 1:1 learning experience and to answer questions about the event.

Additionally, AIAA needs to identify a state captain for Texas. Mr. David Fox will act as the Texas State Captain, but a search for someone to take that role or work with him as a co-captain is in underway. If you are interested in supporting CVD as an attendee, captain, etc., please let David Fox and Wayne Rast know.

Congratulations, Dr. Kyle DeMars of Texas A&M, for your selection as a 2021 Associate Fellow!

The grade of Associate Fellow recognizes individuals “who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or who have done original work of outstanding merit, or who have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.” To be selected as an Associate Fellow an individual must be an AIAA Senior Member in good standing, with at least twelve years professional experience, and be recommended by a minimum of three current Associate Fellows.
